FELTED SCARF by Elina

material: Elina’s dyed prefelts 150g wool/m2

Please note that if you are using some other than this material, you have to make a sample piece in order to find out the shrinkage and other qualities!

The scarf is easy to make if you keep the model simple and needle designs out of dyed prefelts or e.g. build the whole scarf out of various colour pieces of prefelts (seems must be at least 1,5 – 2 cms on top of one  another).
More challenge can be added to this project if you combine the feltlace, flowers etc to this project.

Cut the scarf out of prefelts and make designs to the base (fastest way is to cut design out of colourful prefelts) by needling them, using  needles like coarse, basic and pro.

Start to felt by rubbing through the whole work one hand under the other on top, using plenty of soap and warm water. Pay extra attention designs and seams; rub those a little longer.

If your scarf has 3 dimentional  decorations, “tails”or waves etc;  felt them all carefully between your hands before you start rolling. Wet the whole work with soapy water and start rolling..

Roll the scarf inside a wet towel from every  4 directions several times. Keep your work warm. If you have felted your work carefully using “one hand under the other on top” –technique, you can roll it also doubled. This way your work is better controlled, because to roll is not so long. Do it also lengthwise doubled with V-style. If you roll the scarf doubled, remember to straighten then part where the scarf has been folded to avoid pleats. Also remember to felt the decorations which you have built between rolling phases. Roll them separately, pull them tightly, jerk them etc. If you have a bambu mat, you can rub and roll the “tails” and waves against the mat. This might hurt your hands but is good for the felt!

The finished scarf is elegant and tight. Rinse the scarf using hot and cold water, sqeeze extra water out and shape the scarf and decorations by jerking and streching. Let it dry.

This project is as easy or as challenging as you like. While building the scarf, please keep in mind that the shrinkage of the prefelts is about 30 percent and also that the scarf while felting, has the tendency to get a little longer than the orginal model.

Happy felting!
